Manu Bhaker and Sarabjot Singh Win Bronze in 10m Mixed Team Air Pistol Event at Paris Olympics 2024.
Paris, July 30, 2024 — India clinched its second medal at the ongoing Paris Olympics, as shooters Manu Bhaker and Sarabjot Singh secured a bronze in the 10m mixed team air pistol event. The duo defeated South Korea with a score of 16-10 on Tuesday.
The Indian pair had qualified for the bronze medal match on Monday and delivered a strong performance to double India's medal count in shooting at the Games. Earlier, on Sunday, Manu made history by becoming the first Indian woman shooter to win an Olympic medal. Sarabjot, despite a strong showing in the men's event, missed out on a podium finish. However, today's win has further cemented Manu's legacy, making her the first athlete from independent India to win multiple medals at a single Olympic Games.
India has had many decorated Olympic athletes, including KD Jadhav, Major Dhyan Chand, Karnam Malleswari, Abhinav Bindra, Saina Nehwal, Sushil Kumar, PV Sindhu, and Neeraj Chopra. However, none achieved the feat of winning multiple medals at a single Olympics until Manu, at the young age of 22, accomplished it in her second Games. Manu still has a chance to make history by winning a third medal in the 25m air rifle event.
The bronze medal match followed a race-to-16-points format. The first pair to reach 16 points was declared the winner. South Korea started strong with 20.5 points, while India scored 18.8, giving Korea an early lead. In the second series, Korea shot 19.9, but Manu and Sarabjot scored 10.7 and 10.5, tying the score at 2-2.
In the next round, Sarabjot and Manu both hit 10.4, totalling 20.8 points. Oh Ye Jin's 9.1 hurt Korea, whose total score was 19.8, giving India a 4-2 lead. India then increased their lead to 6-2 with another series win, scoring 20.7 against Korea's 20.5.
Manu and Sarabjot's victory adds to India's growing list of achievements in shooting at the Paris Olympics.
